cattails_header.jpg

The life of a cat can be hard, and you're in control of it in Cattails. You'll have to hunt for food and fight off invading cats, but there will also be time to enjoy the sweeter side of life - even get married and have a litter of kittens. There's tons to do while exploring the wide world of Cattails, so dive in and get your paws dirty.

When you start the game, you'll be given the option of three colonies. It's up to you how you'd like to handle the relations with the residents of these colonies and, if you play your cards right, you may end up in love with one of nine eligible cats for marriage and starting a family. This kind of alliance can prove strategic for those who want to explore and hunt as well since your kittens can be brought along on your wild adventures! You'll want to keep as many allies as you can to ensure victory against cats that would like a piece of your land.

If you enjoy the lighter side of life, there is more than enough to enjoy! You could chat up some of the charming residents, compete in festivals for prizes, customize your den, and even adjust your appearance by adjusting your coat and eye color. If you feel curiosity nipping at your paws, check out some of the dangerous caves and hunt for treasures. You'll get to watch the seasons change around you as well, and with those changes come new treasures to claim.

The world is yours to explore and be the cat's meow in Cattails!

You can purchase Cattails on Steam here. You can check out the official site, Twitter, YouTube and developer's Twitter!

Skyrim on Xbox One X gets the job done - but we expected more

We've already looked at the Fallout 4 patch for Xbox One X, and the impression there is that although massively improved over the turn-out on base console, perhaps the visual sliders were pushed up a little too high, resulting in some issues with performance. Now the verdict is in on Bethesda's companion Skyrim release - and the end result is essentially the opposite: the consistent frame-rate is admirable, and the developer is willing to be flexible on resolution to get there.

If there's a surprise with this patch, it's that Skyrim Special Edition patch for Xbox One X looks essentially identical to the existing PlayStation 4 Pro game, which already delivers a native 4K presentation. The same TAA solution is in place too, smoothing off edges, and reducing flicker on sub-pixel elements like foliage. The overall impression is detail-rich and very attractive overall, but it is essentially a 4K version of the existing console game, further bolstered - just a touch - by the inclusion of tweaks to draw distance, which can see vegetation elements pushed further out into the background.

But if you're looking for further visual enhancements, Skyrim on Xbox One X offers very little. Side-by-side with PS4 Pro, it's virtually impossible to tell the difference and while some elements like shadow quality could possibly be improved with higher level presets imported from the PC game, that's not on the table here. All we could spot in terms of further visual tweaks comes down to a shift in ambient occlusion, which seems to get a subtle upgrade in terms of additional shadowing in the nooks and crannies.

Jelly Deals roundup: Xbox One X bundles, Switch, Destiny 2 and more

A note from the editor: Jelly Deals is a deals site launched by our parent company, Gamer Network, with a mission to find the best bargains out there. Look out for the Jelly Deals roundup of reduced-price games and kit every Saturday on Eurogamer.

We're back, after all that Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales mania. While the vast majority of what some people like to call 'doorbuster' deals are over and done with, there's still no shortage of retailers offering up various sales and discounts right now. We've got a brief period between the end of Black Friday and the beginning of Christmas sales, so let's make the most of it and take a look at the best deals from around the internet right now.

As usual, we've got deals that'll work in the UK, deals that'll work in the US and some deals that will work in both the UK and US, as well as presumably many other places. Let's get started.

The slow disappearing act of Demon's Souls

Two things happened this week that made me think about beautiful stuff vanishing from the world, and about the strange notion that there might be a kind a melancholic pleasure to be had - if melancholic pleasures can be had - in the spaces created by fresh absence. I'm not ghoulishly thinking of death or anything as serious as that. More the weird kind of beauty you sometimes get when you look at a wall of framed pictures and notice the ghostly parchment patches where something else once hung and now hangs no longer. Ghoulishly, ghostly. We are not off to a great start here.

The first thing that happened was that I read a piece on Eurogamer about the fact that Demon's Souls is going to have its online elements turned off for good next February. I never played Demon's Souls properly, and I now suspect that I am not going to. In a vague way it is something I had always planned to do, though, and I know how I would have had to approach it. I have seen this game many times, a world of darkness in which the action unfolds in little pools of golden light that hover around the player. There is a hub world of sorts - in my memory a huge part of it is spiral walkways made of old stone - and there is the Souls DNA in rich form: waiting for an opponent to move, waiting for the perfect opening, thrilling to the energising thwack of a sword hitting a shield: still alive!

Mostly what I know about this game, though, I don't know from the screen. I know from long conversations with Simon Parkin over coffee in which he talked me through these dazzling discoveries he kept making in a game that kept its whole cosmology, as it were, a thing that had to be understood by the player tentatively and over a number of hours. He talked about the messages people left for others, and he talked about the way that some of these messages could not be trusted. I think he maybe talked about invasions, other people suddenly turning up in his game? Or was that Dark Souls? I guess I'll never know now.
