Square Enix's Minecraft-inspired Dragon Quest Builders is coming to Switch next year

Dragon Quest Builders, Square Enix's Minecraft-style construction RPG, is coming to Switch next year, on February 9th.

It originally launched on PS4, PS3, and Vita last year, and was very well received. Despite its obvious similarities to Minecraft, both in its blocky aesthetic and in its core crafting and construction loops, it's an altogether more structured. focussed experience.

Dragon Quest Builders is about more than mere open-ended survival, and features a proper story-driven adventure. Here, you're charged with restoring the world of Alefgard, completing tasks to rebuild towns and attract new citizens. These in turn will help fend off enemies, and offer quests that send you exploring ever-further afield. It was a strong enough twist on the classic Minecraft formula to earn a Recommended badge in Eurogamer's review.

Tencent's Juggernaut MOBA 'Arena of Valor' is Launching Tomorrow in North America and Latin America

We've been following the progress of Tencent's mobile MOBA Arena of Valor for some time now. The game has become an absolute phenomenon in China, boasting 200 million registered users and 80 million daily active players. The game, which is called Honor of Kings in the East, even drew the ire of the Chinese government who labelled it "poison" due to the amount of time people were spending playing it. It's a big deal! After announcing this past July that it would be going global under the name Arena of Valor, it was originally slated for release in November. However, the date was pushed back to early 2018. Now, the Arena of Valor Twitter account has revealed that folks in both North America and Latin America won't have to wait until next year to get their hands on the game after all as Tencent will be pushing the game live and opening up the servers in those regions tomorrow, December 19th.

Back when they delayed the November release date Tencent offered an apology in the form of increased pre-registration awards, and it's not too late to head over to the pre-registration site and pre-register before the game's rollout in North America and Latin America tomorrow. If you're in Europe, well, the game already launched there back in August, so if you aren't already playing it you're a bit behind the curve. It's never too late to jump in though! We'll keep an eye on the App Store and once the game is officially available for download, we'll give you a heads up with the link for Arena of Valor.

Straightforward Space Shooter 'Starfighter Neon' Hits Steam Today, Testers Wanted for iOS and Apple TV Version

Top-down space shooters are a staple of the iOS platform since even before the App Store was officially around. With a genre that's so well-trodden, most new games try to add in complexity and features to try and mix up the formula somewhat. Which is great of course, but there's also something to be said for a straightforward, no nonsense space shooter, you know? That is the aim of Starfighter Neon from developer Michael Higgs aka MadeOfDinosaurs. Starfighter Neon proudly boasts no "epic settings, huge boss battles or an emotional story line" and promises that "it isn't / won't be free!" It's weird we live in a world where a game not being free is a positive feature, but that's mobile games in 2017 for you. Starfighter Neon will have no ads or IAP, just lots of glowy retro visuals and lots of enemies to blast to bits.

Starfighter Neon launched on Steam today for the paltry price of $1.49, which is 25% off its already absurdly low regular price of $1.99. I'd expect the iOS version to cost about the same. Speaking of the iOS version, MadeOfDinosaurs is working on that version as well as a version for the Apple TV right now, and is looking to gather some testers. If you're interested in beta testing this one, head over to the thread in our forums for the details on how to sign up. Otherwise look for Starfighter Neon's iOS and Apple TV versions to release in the very near future.

Hallucinatory horror game Layers of Fear is currently free on the Humble Store

Developer Bloober Team's dizzying first-person haunted house horror game Layers of Fear is currently free on Humble Store, and you even get its superb soundtrack thrown in.

Layers of Fear received some fairly mixed reviews on release in 2016, but it's one of my absolute favourite horror games in recent years. On the one hand, it's pure, pulpy haunted house silliness (which I'm admittedly a sucker for), certainly not afraid to pile on the hoary old genre cliches, or the endless YouTube-baiting jump scares. But it's also handsomely produced, with a surprisingly intelligent, emotionally robust core, which tips the whole thing more heavily into gorgeous, gothic melodrama.

Its real strength though comes in Bloober's knack for a disorientating set-piece, and Layers of Fear features some wonderfully effective horror sequences, all built around the house's penchant for constant reconfiguration and confounding geography. It's the kind of game where walls and corridors shift into ever-more impossible arrangements while your back is turned, and perfectly well-proportioned spaces suddenly become 600 feet tall.

'VAST' is a Cool-Looking Sci-Fi First-Person Shooter that's Exclusive to the Apple TV

We've covered Apple TV games here and there over the years as it's pretty closely related to iOS gaming, but I think it's safe to say that none of us at TouchArcade have been terribly impressed with gaming on Apple's set-top box. When Apple finally (finally!) unveiled an Apple TV that supported a full App Store back in the fall of 2015, we hoped it would be a major landmark for Apple in the home console gaming space. The content was certainly there consisting of both existing iOS games and Apple TV exclusive stuff, but Apple's decision to require all games to be playable with the Siri Remote definitely hampered the proliferation of more traditional gaming experiences. They walked that requirement back in June of last year, finally allowing games to require an MFi controller, but by then it was too little too late.

Anyway, the Apple TV is still a very capable gaming system, and although there's no reason to run out and buy one specifically for gaming the games that are available are a nice bonus for those who want an Apple TV anyway. It's a great media streaming box, after all. This past September when Apple unveiled the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X devices, they also unveiled a new 5th generation Apple TV with support for 4K content, a beefier A10X Fusion chipset, and 3 GB of RAM. There's definitely no doubt that the 4th gen Apple TV and especially the 5th gen box are very capable gaming devices, and long-time games industry veteran Xander Davis and his studio Astrogun wanted to release a "real deal" first-person shooter for Apple TV in an effort to validate it as a real gaming system. They released their game called VAST - Cosmic Treasure Hunters [] last week, and it looks really awesome. Check out the trailer.

VAST is compatible with both the 4th generation and 5th generation Apple TV, and if you're playing it on a 5th generation device it'll run in full 4K at 60 frames per-second. It's an episodic game, and this initial release includes just the first of a planned 11 episode story campaign. Additional episodes will be released as free updates going forward. While VAST is aimed as an Apple TV exclusive, it's also possible that once all episodes of the campaign are released it could make its way to desktop, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. Of course, what I'd REALLY love is for Astrogun to release it for iPhone and iPad too, even though FPS games are a bit fiddly with touch controls I generally get along with them fine and iOS is my main platform for gaming. Also, since it already supports controllers on Apple TV, I'd imagine it would support them just fine on iOS too. While there's no indication it'll ever come to iOS, I still think VAST seems like a cool game and a cool addition to the Apple TV's library, so if you're interested you can grab the game on the Apple TV App Store right now for $9.99.
