Falling into Battle for Azeroth Mania

Look at all those people clogging up Blizzard’s payment system because they HAVE TO HAVE their pre-order today! Sheep!

-Me, Tuesday Afternoon

Okay, I’ve unlocked my Highmountain Tauren allied race and raise my digital deluxe edition pet to 25.

-Also Me, That Same Evening

It isn’t like I don’t have enough things on my “To do” list in Azeroth.  But at some point on Tuesday evening I said, “What the hell!” and joined in the frenzy and pre-ordered Battle for Azeroth.

Battle for Azeroth

They say all online purchasing decisions made after 8pm are a mistake, but I did this at 7:30pm, so I’m in the clear I guess. *cough*

Of course, Blizzard wasn’t making things easy.  They dropped a patch earlier in the day to support the pre-order update and it was having… issues.  Issues like not showing any of your characters.

Breath into the paper bag and login again…

That seemed to be a random error.  You could log out and back in again and you might get your characters.  And if you did get them, then foolishly logged out… never log out on a night where there are login issues… you might not get them the next time you tried.

Anyway, I did get in and found that you could order the expansion from within the game.  I’m not sure if, by that point, it was a better option than the normal Blizzard store, but it worked.  I was set.

Then I swapped to my level 110 Horde character… because for my first time ever in WoW I have a max level Horde character… so I could work on unlocking the Highmountain Tauren.  That was the one of the current four allied races that interested me.  And it is a good thing that was the one, because I still have some work to do on the other three.  Part of my “To do” list is to finish up Argus.

So I got the quest pop for allied races which brought me to Orgrimmar where there is a new embassy building for this sort of thing.  It was, naturally enough, kind of a crowded place.  There you get to pick which allied race to pursue.  I only had the one option.

Tauren… you can have Highmountain Tauren

The game warns you to choose carefully as you can only have one allied race quest chain running at a time.  But the Highmountain quest chain… that is where you go to do it… only takes about 30 minutes.  After that you get a portal back to Orgrimmar where you turn in the last quest, get the achievement for unlocking that race, and are cleared to make one.

So I logged out and went to character creation.

Creating a Highmountain Tauren Warrior

I wasn’t sure what to go with, but warrior seemed like a viable option.  I already have a Horde druid and hunter.  And so I have a new character.  He started at level 20, which he needed to use the special mount that comes with each allied race.

The Highmountain mount is moose-like, which seems a little odd when you see a Tauren with moose antlers riding what seems to be a moose as well.  It is a bit like he is riding his second cousin or something.

Moose on moose action outside Orgrimmar

And now I have another level 20 character knocking about.  I am not sure when I will find the time, if ever, to level him up.

Of course, if I really wanted to, I could use the level 110 boost that came with the expansion.  I have no idea what else I would use it on.  But I think I will let that sit for a while before I use it.

Hero shooter Gigantic will shut down in July, following mass lay-offs at studio last year

Developer Motiga has announced that Gigantic, its colourful, free-to-play MOBA-meets-hero-shooter, will be shut down on July 31st this year.

The news comes via the official Gigantic blog, which confirmed that the game's most recent update would also be its last. "The journey over these last few years was met with outstanding support from our players and we are all very proud of the incredible experience Gigantic is today," it said.

"Discontinuing Gigantic was not an easy decision", the post continued, "The game is a unique and exciting experience that captured many hearts and minds. Unfortunately, it did not resonate with as many players as we'd hoped."

The Latest 'Pokemon Go' Trailer is Narrated by Stephen Fry

Niantic is really upping their trailer game with the latest promotional video for Pokemon Go [Free], it's narrated by Stephen Fry of... well, loads of things. Additionally, ot's scored by George Fenton who among other things is responsible for the music of the Planet Earth series, Life, Frozen Planet, and loads more. It all comes together to create a animated short that I really wish was more than a minute long, check it out:

Featured in the video are pokemon from the Hoenn region which are now appearing in Pokemon Go. Do you know your pokemon well enough to be able to name the pokemon in this trailer? I've got to admit, I'm more of a classic Pokemon Red / Blue kinda guy, so a lot of these newfangled pokemon are sort of lost on me. Sign of the times, I suppose.

Botanicula developer's gorgeously deranged adventure Chuchel is out in March

Amanita Design, the studio behind the wonderfully surreal likes of Machinarium, Samorost, and Botanicula, has announced that its unhinged comedy adventure Chuchel will release for PC and Mac on March 7th.

Chuchel follows its fuzzy, comedically furious protagonist on a quest to "retrieve his cherished cherry". That's not the half of it though: "Outsmart the Pool Monster, escape frenzied Pac-Men and master the bird race. Join forces with Chuchel's buddy Kekel and show the mischievous Chuchel that stealing cherries is wrong", says Amanita of the game.

Although Chuchel bears the same striking art design and mouse-driven interactions of its predecessors, Amanita has said that it might be better to think of the game more as an interactive comedy adventure than a classic point-and-click puzzler.

Night In The Woods Review

Best 'Minecraft' Skins On the Marketplace—'Star Wars', 'Stranger Things', and More

In the beginning, there was only one. I'm talking about skins in Minecraft [$6.99] back in the day, where you could only be Steve and Steve alone (despite the rumors of the Herobrine skin that, of course, never materialized). No matter if you were old, young, male, female, you had but one look while traversing the immense expanse that is Minecraft. However, that started to change when modders took the lead in offering new skins to players, providing a fresh look to the game that became essential once huge servers became more popular. Mojang gradually joined the party as well and started offering "official skins," and it's been doing so ever since.

Once the Minecraft Marketplace became a thing, skins started coming at a much faster pace, and now we find ourselves with dozens and dozens of skins. Choosing the best ones is challenging. So, we've decided to put together a short list of the best skins currently on the Marketplace so you can shop wisely. Don’t expect to like all of our suggestions, because we'll try and address different tastes. Still, this list will be helpful if you don't have many coins but still want to dress your Steve in nice clothes.

If you're a Disney fan, you can pick up the latest pack that consists of characters from the movie Moana. There's a total of 25 skins that range from Moana and Maui to the cute piggy Pua and even the anthropomorphized Ocean. You could even do the half-shark Maui. This is a pretty cool pack because it's a departure from most other character designs on the Marketplace. If your tastes veer towards the creepy instead of the cheerful, you can grab the Stranger Things Skin Pack, which comes with 52 skins that include all the kids and grownups, the Demogorgon, the kids in their Ghostbusters costumes, Barb in the Upside Down (Justice for Barb), and plenty more. Pretty cool pack that gives you a ton of options when it comes to turning your Realm into the 80s.

Continuing on the movie theme, the Star Wars Classic Pack is another great choice, and it comes with 55 skins from Episodes IV to VI. It includes a variety of Luke skins—from peasant to Jedi Knight and beyond—as well as Princess Leia, Darth Vader, C-3PO, R2-D2, and even Yoda. A pretty cool pack overall with, again, a ton of choices. If you're more of a newer Star Wars fan, you can grab the Star Wars Prequel Skin Pack or even the Star Wars Rebels Skin Pack.

If you're more into horror, you can grab the Campfire Tales Skin Pack, which comes with the kinds of skins you would expect to hear about around a campfire. There are only 16 skins in this one, so the selection is on the limited side compared to the ones I've mentioned earlier (although it's also slightly cheaper). The Sci-Fi Horror pack is also fun—if a little bland—for those who like their horror in space rather than around the campfire. Expect Husks and infected individuals in this one. Finally, there's the Spookfest, which comes with skins like Invisiboy and Eyesore the Experiment.

The Marketplace includes some other silly ones as well, like the Emoji Skin Pack—which turns all of you into emoji and even includes a skin called Pile of Poo—the Dapper Folk Skin Pack—for those who want to class it up—and the Meow! And Woof! ones, which—you guessed it—turn you all into either cats or dogs. I hope this list helps you on your next shopping trip to the Marketplace. Most of these packs are 460 coins or under. I know that on the Java version you can get many of these for free, but not everyone has access to that version and many (including the young ones) don't know how to download skins. Let me know if you like any skins that I haven't mentioned, and happy Minecrafting!
