Arthurian Legends Gives Medieval Action An Old-School Twist

3B3A6D85-306F-4C9B-8C19-848ABE8A1BB1.png
First person melee has gotten its fair share of iterations and styles in games large amd small, from Dead Island to Chivalry. Currently in development for PC, Arthurian Legends' approach to melee is decidedly more 90's, harkening back to the fast-paced action of Witchhaven and Hexen.

Sword, shield, axe, and mace. Holy grenade and throwing dagger. Arthurian Legends provides you with a weath of weapons to slay the forces of evil, leaving blood and guts in your wake. Split into themed chapters akin to Doom or the recent Dusk, you might fight across the kingdom of Albion: forest and swamp, castles where Saxons and evil mages lurk, the caves and cemeteries that undead and skeletons await in the shadows.

Alongside your weapons, Arthurian Legends lets you control the hordes of enemies with magicial power-ups that can freeze foes or unleash lightning storms, as well as special relics to collect and secret areas with hidden items to find.

Arthurian Legends is currently in development, with a demo expected in the future. You can learn more about the game and developer through its site and Twitter page.

Evidence of new Sonic Racing game mounts

More evidence has emerged pointing to the possible release of a brand-new, Sumo Digital developed Sonic racing game later this year.

Speculation about a potential new entry in the fantastic Sonic All-Stars Racing series began last week when images of a slide, purportedly from an internal Sumo Digital presentation, appeared on Resetera. The slide made reference to an "unannounced karting game" based on an "established global IP".

Although the slide didn't explicitly mention Sega's iconic blue mascot, it was an easy connection to make given that Sumo's previous karting games - Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed - were based on the Sonic franchise.

Humble Android Bundle 22 Includes 'Death Road to Canada' and 7 More Games for $5

Humble Android Bundle 22 has one of the strongest collection of titles available yet for Android, including Death Road to Canada [$11.99]. While most TA readers use iOS devices, many of us have Android phones and iPads, and if you're looking to expand your Android library, or find some new titles to play, $5 for 8 excellent titles is hard to beat.

$5 or more Tier

Death Road to Canada

Death Road to Canada, $11.99 You should know all about Noodlecake's comical, roguelike-inspired zombie survival game at this point. But if you haven't played it, now's the time to do so. It's going to give you dozens of hours of gameplay at the very least, with lots of surprises along the way. This has controller support and works with Android TV, so you can play the game however you want to play it. Considering the Android version alone is $9.99, a minimum of $5 for the bundle with DR2C is a ridiculous bargain.

Party Hard Go

Party Hard Go, $6.99 It took a long time to get to mobile, but now you can have it at a substantial discount. There's a strong sense of chaos to this game where you murder a bunch of people at parties across the country. If you play the game as a way to have a little bit of macabre fun, and less as a serious stealth game experience, you'll have a good time. While the controls are surprisingly complicated, the touch controls work rather well for this title, though the game has controller support as well.

Pay Above the Average

OXENFREE

OXENFREE, $4.99 Night School Studio's point and click adventure tells a fascinating story about a group of friends who get involved in a supernatural adventure on a mysterious island. There's branching paths and multiple endings, so there's good reason to keep coming back to the game if you find yourself intrigued by the story threads you don't pick up the first time around. Need another sign of the ridiculous value of this bundle? You'll pay $15 for this game on console or PC normally.

Mushroom 11

Mushroom 11, $4.99 This platformer boasts a unique control scheme perfect for touchscreens, as you use your finger to erase parts of your green fungal organism to move throughout the world and solve puzzles. It works well on phones and tablets, and works a lot better than most platformers do. This also comes with the digital artbook, which is well worth a look to see how the distinctive art style came together.

Another Lost Phone

Another Lost Phone, $2.99 Games that take place through phones feel like they're increasing in popularity, and the original A Normal Lost Phone [$2.99] was a major catalyst for the genre. The sequel offers another compelling narrative, as you discover just who is the eponymous Laura, and why she might have disappeared, leaving her phone behind.

Pay What You Want

Splitter Critters

Splitter Critters, $2.99 This was the Apple iPhone game of the year, but now you can have it on Android for pennies. You'll cut and split apart the landscape in order to solve puzzles and help the critters get to the safety of their spaceship. The touchscreen mechanics are rather unique, and the game boasts a storybook look. Not to be surprised, since this is the studio that made Dark Echo [$1.99], the sound and music here are exceptional.

Galaxy of Pen & Paper

Galaxy of Pen & Paper, $4.99 Behold Studios returns with another meta-RPG adventure game. Once again using the theme of a tabletop game, you serve as the game master and players of a space-faring adventure, helping to build out your crew and spaceship as you go on dangerous quests through the galaxy. If you found yourself disappointed by Knights of Pen and Paper 2 [Free], fret not - this is by the original developers of the game, and expands on the concept in a variety of ways, and is not just the same idea but in space.

Star Vikings Forever

Star Vikings Forever, $2.99 The creator of Chroma Squad [$4.99] made this Plants Vs. Zombies-inspired lane-based RPG. You build up a team of space vikings, and use your different abilities to try and defeat armies of space snails. There's a strong puzzle aspect to the game, as the snails start to use tricky formations and abilities that will test your strategies and viking abilities.

Humble Android Bundle 22 is available until midday February 19th, with the potential for more games to be added on February 12th...as if you needed more of an excuse to buy this bundle.

Nintendo finally confirms the truth about Toad's head

Nintendo has finally confirmed that Toad's head is indeed his head - and not, as some had recklessly speculated, a hat - settling an issue that's been hotly debated for decades.

The shocking revelation (shocking for those poor, misguided souls on Team Hat, at least) comes courtesy of Super Mario Odyssey producer Yoshiaki Koizumi, who took the time to answer a few Mario-related fan questions in a new - and, need I remind you - officially sanctioned video from Nintendo.

"I'm going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out", said Koizumi after his megaton reveal, "Maybe there's something inside..."

'Pokemon GO' Quests Discovered in Data Mine for 1.61.1/0.91.1 Update

Pokemon GO [Free] version 1.61.1 (0.91.1 on Android) is starting to propagate on iOS and Android, and the data miners over at the Pokemon GO-obsessed The Silph Road uncovered some of the new features in the update.

The biggest new feature available in the update is the new Quest functionality. Previously, the daily spin and catch bonuses were called Quests, but now two new types of Quests are appearing in the game files:

  • STORY_QUEST
  • CHALLENGE_QUEST

There are 10 new objectives available, such as hatching an egg or winning a gym battle, along with multi-part objectives. Attributes include rewards, context, and the goal. Professor Willow makes an appearance in the game files as a Quest character, and you need to complete the quest in order to make them happy. Flags such as QUEST_PRECONDITION_MEDAL will serve as prerequisites for players to start certain quests.

Now, while these features are in the 0.91.1 game files, this does not mean that Quests will come to Pokemon GO right away. With data mining, Niantic regularly manages to place the foundation for new features, such as Legendary Pokemon or the third-generation ones that are now appearing in the game. So players should get excited for new things to do, but they shouldn't expect anything right away.

The data mine uncovered some other functionality. Players can now see all shiny Pokemon together by using the search tool. The news section has a massive overhaul, prioritizing unread news. This should make getting updates in-game from Niantic a far better experience. Niantic overhauled the energy bar used in combat, at least from a technical perspective. Interestingly, new attributes for currentBar and maxBars, along with a new 'key' system might help support multiple energy bars, or just make updating the progress of the energy bar better than it was in before.

Deoxys and Castform have new Pokedex display buttons. These Pokemon have new attributes such as their 'forms' to go along with gender and shiny status, and the Pokedex now supports displaying these forms. New checks for device support are in the app. In particular with the news that users of iOS versions before iOS 11 are getting cut off, the app now supports checking the user's device to make sure they know to upgrade their OS as soon as possible. A new attribute stores the Trainer's latitude and longitude. The Silph Road's data mining team doesn't know what this represetns at this time.

These functions all go along with the listed "various bug fixes and performance updates" from the official update announcement for version 1.61.1/0.91.1.

Expect Pokemon GO's latest update to start hitting your local App Store or Google Play Store in the coming hours as the stores process the update and make it available to users.

Sega might be teasing Puyo Puyo Tetris for PC

Fans are speculating that mysterious news posts, which have started to appear on various Sega game communities on Steam, could be teasing a PC release of Puyo Puyo Tetris.

The posts, which were spotted by Reddit user Dasnap, began materialising on Steam earlier today. Each originated from a user calling themselves 'Sega dev', and each contains a unique ASCII illustration of a block from either the Puyo Puyo and Tetris series.

At present, there are Puyo Puyo Tetris posts on the official Vanquish news feed, as well as those of Bayonetta, Valkyrie Chronicles, Tembo the Badass Elephant, Binary Domain, Alpha Protocol, Renegade Ops, Jet Set Radio, Hell Yeah!, Sega Bass Fishing, Nights into Dreams, and Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics.

'Avernum 3: Ruined World' Now Available on Desktop, iPad Version Coming in Q1 2018

For nearly a quarter century, Spiderweb Software has been cranking out unabashedly old-school RPGs with excellent stories, characters, and universes to explore. When the husband and wife duo began bringing some of their titles from the Avadon and Avernum series to the iPad starting way back in 2011, they brought their legion of devout fans over from the desktop world and also found a brand new set of fans in the world of mobile gaming, both of which enjoyed being able to play such in-depth titles on the go. They kind of bounced back and forth releasing entries in the Avadon and Avernum series on the iPad, with the full Avadon trilogy becoming complete in the fall of 2016. Then in September of this past year, they announced that the final entry in the Avernum trilogy was also in the works and would arrive on both desktop and iPad in 2018. Titled Avernum: 3: Ruined World, the game launched on desktop last week and is slated to arrive on the iPad in the next month or so. Check out the official trailer.

I covered this previously, but I still think it's worth noting that the Avernum series has a really interesting history. It is actually based on some of Spiderweb's earliest work from the '90s, the Exile trilogy. These were top-down dungeon crawler RPGs with simplistic 2D visuals and a whole lot of text. In the early 2000s, Spiderweb decided to reboot each entry in the trilogy under the new name Avernum which added a lot more features and improved visuals with a more Diablo-like isometric viewpoint. Then about ten years later, they rebooted the series again and completely remade all three games into what we know today: Avernum: Escape from the Pit, Avernum 2: Crystal Souls, and the just-released Avernum 3: Ruined World.

If you simply cannot wait for the iPad version of Avernum 3, you can find it on Steam, on GOG.com, on The Humble Store, or straight from the Spiderweb Software website. With the iPad version's planned release of Q1 2018 we should be seeing that arrive before the end of March if all goes according to plan, and according to a teaser on Spiderweb's website once the iPad version of Avernum 3 is shipped they'll be starting on an entirely new game series. Exciting!
