Watch the two official Chinese mobile versions of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in action

Chinese PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' publisher Tencent has released its previously announced Battlegrounds mobile games, and they both look impressively close to offering the full-fat battle royale experience seen on Xbox One and PC.

When Tencent secured the Chinese publishing rights to developer Bluehole's Battlegrounds last year, it announced that it had several PUBG projects in the works. There was the localised version of the core PC game, plus two separate mobile offerings - known as PUBG: Exhilarating Battlefield and PUBG: Army Attack.

Exhilarating Battlefield is a more-or-less straight port of the existing PC and Xbox game, developed by Lightspeed & Quantum Studio; Army Attack, meanwhile, is designed to offer a slightly more arcade-y twist on the familiar Battlegrounds survival formula, focussing on land, sea, and air battles. This second game is being developed by Timi Studios.

Space battles receive the card battler treatment in Cosmos Invictus

690BE174-DC68-474E-A7BD-E4AD0261BD8E.jpeg
The collectible card game / card battle genre has been thriving in recent years, on both mobile and PC thanks to titles like Hearthstone and Duelyst. Cosmos Invictus looks to be another entry in the category, eschewing a fantasy theme for a futuristic clash of cruisers, mechs, and pilots.

Choosing from alien and human factions, constructing themed decks of mechs and pilots, you wage battle for control of the solar system, your fights helping advance your factions control of specific sectors and regions. The battlefield of Cosmos Invictus is divided into designated slots and rows, with formations being crucial to gaining bonuses and buffs; you can even strategically reposition mechs mid-battle at the cost of fuel, highlighting the game's larger focus on card placement.

To enhance your mechs, you can install pilots to their cards; each pilot brings unique attack and defense bonuses as well as special abilties to add to a mech's existing skills. Play the right pilot at the right time, and you can force enemy mechs to eject their pilots, jam an enemy's attack capabilities, or even replicate an opponent's mech card to bolster your own forces. Waste turns and precious mech energy, and you'll need to retreat to your side's spaceship for refueling.

Cosmos Invictus is in development for PC, and is currently in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign. You can learn more details and a breakdown of mechanics on the game's site.

'Surgeon Simulator' Developer's Cat-Dating Sim 'Purrfect Date' Out Now in the App Store

We've been irrationally excited for Bossa Studio's forthcoming cat-dating game ever since we first heard about it back in August of last year, and just prior to its "official" release date of Valentine's Day this Wednesday the pun-laden Purrfect Date [$4.99] is now available in the App Store. Created by the two-person Bae Team and published by Bossa Studios of Surgeon Simulator [$4.99] and I Am Bread [$4.99] fame, Purrfect Date is "the ultimate crossbreed between visual novel, dating sim, and dark British comedy." You'll play as a human who travels to a place called Cat Island, which sounds like some sort of utopia to me, and you'll date a number of different types of felines in order to unravel some sort of crazy mystery. I don't know, it's a cat dating simulator, do you really need to know anything besides that? Here are two very musical and quite catchy trailers for Purrfect Date so you can get an idea of what it's all about.

Yes, "Come for the pussy and stay for the tale" will go down in history as the greatest tagline of a video game ever. Purrfect Date launched on Steam back in December to overwhelming delight of all who played it, and now it can accompany you on your travels and fit snugly into your pocket. Also, the game costs just a fiver and there is no IAP or any other shenanigans of any kind. Just buy the game once and date cats until you can't take it anymore. I like that. Honestly, this is the type of game that you either bought the moment you saw this headline or you just don't get what the fuss is about. If you're in the former camp, then enjoy playing Purrfect Date as you set out on a romantic feline adventure. If you're in the latter camp, then just go about your day and forget you ever saw this totally weird game!

Here's more mousy gameplay from adorable PSVR platform puzzler Moss

Developer Polyarc has released new gameplay footage of its adorable, mouse-themed PSVR platform puzzler Moss, due to arrive on PS4 soon.

Moss charts the adventures of the tiny Quill as she journeys through a gorgeously rendered, human-sized fantasy world. Its first unusual trick is its clever use of a hybrid first-person / third-person perspective. Although a cursory glance might suggest similarities to the sweepingly cinematic, surprisingly effective cameras used in the likes of Chronos and Edge of Nowhere, Moss is designed to give you a far greater sense presence in the world.

Rather than merely being a passive observer, Moss casts you in the role of an actual being, a spirit known as a Reader. You view the world through the Reader's eyes, and can fully interact with everything around you. Even Quill is totally aware of your presence.

Supercell Defends Knight Nerf in Latest 'Clash Royale' Balance Changes

The latest balance update for Supercell's Clash Royale [Free] has players angry about nerfs to the Knight card. The balance changes just launched on February 12th, but Supercell today defended their move to reduce the Knight's hit points by 6%. While this is a minor change, the community is angry about a common card getting nerfed, which grants more power to higher-rarity counters.

It might've looked like his use rate wasn't very high, but this was heavily shadowed by the fact that the Mega Knight/Skeleton Barrel cycle decks were dominating and making everything else look relatively low by comparison.

Knight is still used quite a lot and is a pretty key component in, for example, the - still heavily used - Log/Zap bait deck with Princess and Goblin Barrel, and the fast Balloon cycle deck. For 3 Elixir he gives some extremely strong defensive power and allows for some decent cycling in fast decks.

One key reasoning for nerfing Knight now is that we had a meta where cards like Valkyrie and Mini P.E.K.K.A should be really good alternatives to the Knight, but they sit at nearly ~0% use rate in top level play. They are so outperformed by the Knight that we felt like he needed some toning down to make these other troops more comparable.

As such, nerfing this card should theoretically increase the variety of the meta, as counters become more viable to the Knight. However, Reddit users make the point that this isn't exactly a one-to-one scenario. The Knight's common rarity makes it easier for players who don't spend a lot on the game to raise it up. The Valkyrie and Mini PEKKA, each being rare, are harder for players to level up to serve as an effective counter to the Knight. So, this comes across as a move that placates top-tier players who might have the time and money to level up cards with greater rarity, at the expense of the larger community.

This is the challenge with any kind of games-as-a-service title like this, though. What's good for the high-level and competitive scenes might not be good for the plebeians, and vice versa, not to mention that Supercell is still looking out for its bottom line. It might just take time for the meta to shake out from here, and players might find a new common card that works well in the meta, particularly for those free-to-play Clash Royale players.

The February 12th balance update also started to tease a new unit, the Magic Archer. Players are starting to uncover the details for this Legendary unit. He will boast a magic arrow that damages all enemies in its path, doing area damage to air and ground units, and a projectile range of 11. The width of the projectile might make or break this new troop, though.

Magic Archer Stats! from ClashRoyale

Here's the full list of balance changes from the February 12th update:

  • Mega Knight: Spawn and Jump Damage -25%; Deployment radius reduced (deployment won't hit beyond bridge and river)
  • Skeleton Barrel: Skeleton count 8 → 6
  • Knight: Hitpoints -6%
  • Inferno Dragon: Switches between targets slower
  • Valkyrie: Hit Speed 1.5sec → 1.4sec
  • Bandit: Minimum Dash Range 4 → 3.5
  • Dark Prince: Hit Speed 1.4sec → 1.3sec; Hitpoints +5%
  • Magic Archer: Preparing for the Arena...

A three-stage Lunar New Year challenge is running until Friday, February 16th, at 3:00 AM EST. The first free entry stage has players collecting 10 Crowns to win 1000 coins and unlock Stage 2. Stage 2 has players fighting to get six wins before losing three times, with a top prize of three copies of a mystery card along with 600 coins and 25 cards. The final stage has players fighting to get nine wins before losing three times, with a Legendary Chest, 6000 coins, and 300 cards available for those who take home the top prize.

The Lunar New Year event and these latest balance changes are now live in Clash Royale.

Behind the Scenes of God of War’s Epic Half-Time Show

As you may have seen this weekend, Kratos and Atreus made a special – and unexpected — guest appearance in Oakland, CA.

The immersive illusion employed cutting-edge technology called “projection mapping” to bring Kratos, Atreus, and the Norse world of God of War to life in front of thousands of fans. You can check out a recording of the performance above.

This projection-mapping magic uses ultra-bright video projectors together with powerful media server engines to paint vivid imagery complete with sense of motion and depth directly onto large surfaces. It could be a building, a wall around Asgard, a World Serpent…or in this case, the basketball court during half time. Because when you think of Norse myth, you think — basketball. Of course!

Santa Monica Studio drove the creative process over several months in collaboration with a fantastic agency called Platige to ensure it aligned with our studio’s vision for the game. After storyboarding the epic action sequence, we mo-capped the official in-game stunt performers for both Kratos and Atreus to ensure both characters moved and behaved in an authentic fashion.

This action vignette shows Kratos and Atreus facing off against Draugr, Helwalkers and one particularly unhappy Ogre. While this sequence does not appear in the game, its inspiration comes directly from Kratos and Atreus’ adventure.

This is just one more step closer to God of War’s April 20th release date, so stay tuned for more exciting info and content in the weeks leading up to the launch.

A big thank you to everyone who collaborated to bring this vision to life.

'Monster Merge' by 'Down the Mountain' Developer Umbrella Now Available for App Store Preorder

Umbrella put up its newest in-house title, Monster Merge, up for pre-order on the App Store for a release in March. Their title about combining creatures brings in some elements of puzzle games, with a heavy dose of idle game mechanics. You drag monsters of the same type together in order to level them up and discover more of the new monsters. As you merge monsters, you can start to expand your base of operations, and use your current array of monsters to complete tasks for you, while they also generate idle revenue for you.

If you liked Down the Mountain's [Free] distinctive art style, you're in luck: Monster Merge uses a similar isometric blocky style for all the creatures. This gives the creatures a unique look, where basic monsters resemble creatures like spiders and snakes, but have a friendlier, more abstract look. As you get further in the game, you'll see creatures that start to use different design, resembling orcs, dragons, and...skeleton wizards? This game's gonna have it all. Or at least, it'll have 30 unique monsters at launch, and there is plenty of potential down the road for the game to use more. How about some cameos from indie games or Down the Mountain? Eli showed up in that one, how about we finally put him to work for a change?!

Umbrella hit the map thanks in large part to the brilliant Boom Dots [Free], and steadily expanded from there with games like Down the Mountain, Wobblers [Free] and Back to Square One [Free]. The studio expanded into publishing in 2017, rapidly putting out a bunch of casual titles from other developers, and giving them the Umbrella polish and promotional push. The studio still does its own games, and Monster Merge is their latest original, in-house-developed title.

You can preorder Monster Merge on the App Store right now. I suppose pre-ordering a free game is kind of silly, but the way to look at it is that this way you know the game will get downloaded to your device the second that it's available to download. I mean, think about all the other things you take for granted. Is pre-ordering a digital file, which is if not literally infinite (the sun will explode one day) then practically infinite, really the straw that breaks the camel's back when it comes to the absurdity of our modern existence?

You can spend the next few weeks pondering that question while you wait for Umbrella's Monster Merge to release on the App Store on March 7th.

Ketchapp's Latest Twitchy Sensation 'Flippy' Hit the App Store this Weekend

Ketchapp releases so many games nowadays it's hard to even keep track. And on top of just releasing a ton of games, the vast majority of them end up breaking into the top games chart, sometimes just briefly but often for weeks or months at a time. It's truly remarkable. Anyway, their latest game, which launched on the sly with little fanfare or warning this past Friday, is called Flippy [Free]. It's a riff on those side-scrolling auto-run platformers that have you switching from the top of whatever surface you're running on to the bottom, where you're essentially running on the "ceiling" of the level. You do this to avoid hazards and as the game progresses things start moving awfully fast, making this an extremely twitchy experience.

Probably the coolest thing about Flippy (and I'm terribly annoyed Ketchapp doesn't have an official trailer for this game but hopefully the brief Twitter video below will do) is how the music and visuals sort of "trip out" the longer you play. The soundtrack is some punchy electronic music that will either speed up or slow down depending on what's happening in the game, and it's a really eerie effect. The levels also twist and turn around in all directions, and in general despite Flippy using silhouettes for its army of unlockable characters it's a very colorful game. Basically there are points when I'm playing this game that I feel like I accidentally took the brown acid.

Naturally Flippy is free to play with ads and an in-game currency for unlocking new characters, and you can remove ads for a $2.99 IAP or get a coin doubler for a $1.99 IAP if you want to get rid of the free to play junk. Flippy is surprisingly fun so if you enjoy these types of flipping runners I'd definitely suggest checking this one out.

Indie climber Mount Your Friends 3D is swinging into action later this month, wayward genitals and all

Mount Your Friends, the cult indie hit featuring raucous physics-based tower building and aggressively pendulous genitals, is making the leap from 2D to 3D on February 23rd, developer Stegersaurus has revealed.

Mount Your Friends, in its original guise, tasked brave players, in the roll of scantily clad bodybuilders, with climbing as high as they could - sometimes solo, often with friends, and always on the back of a goat. Unifying the whole homoerotic extravaganza was a wilfully awkward control scheme in which climbers were forced to clumsily drag themselves upward one appendage at a time. Oh, and hypnotically carefree wangs.

The newly unveiled Mount Your Friends 3D: A Hard Man is Good to Climb, to give the game its full, awesome name, offers more of the same knockabout, pendulous multiplayer action - only this time, given the inevitable march of technology, the cheeky sprites of yesteryear have been replaced by full-on polygonal dongs.
