Decipher an Ancient Language in Sci-fi Archaeology Adventure Heaven’s Vault, Coming Soon to PS4

At inkle, we love adventure stories. Jules Verne or Indiana Jones, Stargate or Star Wars: we love discovering new worlds, taking risks, and meeting mysterious strangers. And for our latest game, we’ve combined two of our favorite settings: the distant past – and the distant future.

Heaven’s Vault is the story of archaeologist Aliya Elasra, who sails the Nebula with her robot sidekick Six, finding and translating inscriptions written in the lost language of the ancients…

And when we say language, we really mean it: for Heaven’s Vault, we’ve created an entire language for you to figure out as you play.

The ancient glyphs you’ll encounter as you explore all have meanings. These meanings combine into words, and the words form the fragments and phrases you’ll find inscribed on the scattered artefacts and ruins of the Nebula.

Heaven's Vault

It’s a puzzle mechanic, but one that comes with a narrative twist, because every inscription is part of the story. Everything you read was written by someone – and if you can figure out what they were saying, then maybe you’ll uncover another piece of the Nebula’s forgotten past…

But be warned – you can’t always be sure if the translation you’ve chosen is right: pick the wrong word, and you might get entirely the wrong idea about a place or what an artifact was for.

Heaven's Vault

Because Heaven’s Vault isn’t just a puzzle game, it’s an adventure. Our previous title, 80 Days, won several awards for its adaptive narrative, which let you play through the story in any way you chose.

Heaven’s Vault is bigger, better and deeper.

Heaven's Vault

Whether you’re delving into ancient ruins, or hanging out in the local bar of your home town, the storyline is always moving. Chances must be seized or they’ll be missed, and every decision you make will have its consequences.

Heaven's Vault

This is a world filled with complex characters. Like Yazi, the labourer out for revenge against his former employer by any means; or Huang, the bookish nerd with a crush; or Mina, the heiress keen to escape her over-bearing father.

Some are friendly, some are cautious, and some are out to con you – but whoever they are, they will remember everything you say and do. Remember: everyone in the Nebula wants something.

Heaven's Vault

We’ll be announcing a release date soon but until then, why not whet your appetite for ancient languages with the following inscription, found on a diagonally-cut black box sent back from the near future…

Heaven's Vault

And be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!

New Enhanced Xbox 360 Titles And Feature Come To Xbox One Backward Compatibility

Bill Stillwell, Lead Program Manager on the Xbox Platform team, provides an update on the Backward Compatibility program including new enhanced Xbox 360 titles and a new feature.

Starting today, four new Xbox 360 titles will be enhanced for Xbox One X, which includes The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, Forza Horizon, Fable Anniversary and Crackdown, the newest addition available now in the Xbox One Backward Compatibility library. We’re also excited to release a new graphics setting for enhanced Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One X to give you more control over your gaming experience.

Xbox 360 games that are enhanced for Xbox One X run at a higher resolution and 9X the original pixel count on Xbox One X. The power of Xbox One X enables the Xbox 360 emulator to showcase the very best version of the game possible with the existing assets—all without touching the game code. Today’s additions join the seven previously released Enhanced Xbox 360 titles like Halo 3, Skate 3, and Gears of War 3 for a total of 11 Xbox One X Enhanced Xbox 360 games.

Here is the full list of Xbox 360 games that are in the Xbox One X Enhanced catalog:

When you play Enhanced Xbox 360 games on Xbox One X, you can now choose how to experience them—with enhanced graphics or in their original form. Enhanced graphics will be turned on by default, running your game with higher resolution, 9X the pixel count, increased texture details and antialiasing, allowing you to enjoy greater visual clarity than ever before. If you turn off the Graphics setting, the graphics will be comparable to the experience on Xbox One or Xbox One S. Here’s how to access the setting. Note, once you change the setting, you’ll need to restart the game:

  1. Press “View” and “Menu” buttons on the controller to pull up the Xbox 360 guide
  2. Navigate to “Settings” blade
  3. Select “Xbox One X Settings”

  1. Select to optimize for “Graphics” or “Performance”

We’re thrilled with the continued excitement for Xbox One Backward Compatibility—the community has played more than 840 million hours of Xbox 360 games on Xbox One. Compatibility is important to Xbox, to developers and their games, and our community. Preserving the art form of video games is part of our DNA, which is why Xbox One is the only console designed to play the best games of the past, present and future. We’re excited to continue to deliver on our vision of compatibility and grow our current Backward Compatible library, which includes more than 460 Xbox 360 games, 11 Xbox One X Enhanced Xbox 360 titles, and 13 Original Xbox games.

Monster Hunter World's next Horizon Zero Dawn crossover quest starts tomorrow on PS4

Monster Hunter World's second Horizon Zero Dawn crossover quest will commence tomorrow on PlayStation 4, and Capcom has offered final details.

When Monster Hunter World launched last month, PS4 players were able embark on a special event quest, enabling them to craft Palico armour resembling a machine from Horizon Zero Dawn. This second collaboration quest (which was teased well before the game's release) unlocks the ability to forge armour that turns hunters into Horizon Zero Dawn's protagonist Aloy. You can see both the hunter and Palico gear in action below.

To unlock the transformational full armour set (known as "Aloy α"), as well as Aloy's Bow, players will need to complete the new The Proving event quest - requiring the successful elimination of a giant Anjanath in the Ancient Forest.

'Temple of Spikes: The Legend' Is a Hardcore Premium Platformer Offering Over 50 Hours of Gameplay, Out Now on the App Store

I got some serious deja-vu when I saw Temple of Spikes: The Legend [$5.99] appeared one the App Store this morning. It turns out that, almost exactly a year to the day, Tigrido announced the debut of the Temple of Spikes [Free] series on the App Store with what was a rather entertaining little arcade game. They may share a similar title, but Temple of Spikes: The Legend couldn't be more different than its predecessor in both gameplay and scope. Now a hardcore twitch platforming title, Temple of Spikes: The Legend takes influence from its speedrunning peers like the excellent Mos Speedrun 2 [$1.99], and the promise of 30 levels and a frankly ridiculous 50+ hours of gameplay underline the game's credentials as Tigrido's first major App Store premium release. After much anticipation, Temple of Spikes: The Legend is available to download for $5.99 today on iOS.

I'm incredibly impressed with what I've seen of The Legend so far, as while it keeps the previous game's cutesy pixel art aesthetic, it really takes a huge step forward in terms of the complexity and depth. As well as the abundance of traps and obstacles you'd expect from such a title, The Legend features neat features like the ability to slowdown and rewind time, which could create some particularly interesting conundrums across the game's lengthy duration. 25 characters with unique abilities is also a nice change from comparable adventure titles that normally focus on one core protagonist, and will hopefully create some interesting debate amongst the speedrunning community. However, the promise of a hot-seat multiplayer mode is perhaps the most enticing addition to The Legend, as I can't really think of anything more suited to both the replay-ability of twitch platformers, and the natural portability of iOS devices. I hope Tigrido create a cult hit with this daring premium release - if you'd also like to delve into the world of Temple of Spikes: The Legend, head by our forum thread for more discussion.

SuperData and the Rise of Fortnite

As we roll on down to the final hours of February, SuperData Research has their digital revenue numbers for January available at last.

SuperData Research Top 10 – January 2018

The standard top four, League of Legends and the three Chinese MMORPGs, maintain their hold on the top of the list, with PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fornite: Battle Royale and World of Warcraft hanging on to the next three slots as they did in December.  The only change was CS:GO popping up into 8th place, edging out World of Tanks while Overwatch hung onto the last spot as the cyclical ROBLOX dropped off yet again.

So not much change there, with PUBG and Fortnite holding on, having scavenged most of the remaining customers that H1Z1 was living off of.

It is on consoles where the battle between those two continues.  In December PUBG jumped onto the list, taking third position with its release on XBox, while Fortnite lingered down in eighth.  With the coming of January though, Fortnite, available on both XBox and PS4, rose in the ranks as PUBG disappeared from the list.  The questions is, will Fortnite’s edge on consoles help it overtake PUBG on the PC as well?

Also missing from the console list is the much beleaguered Star Wars Battlefront II.

And over on the mobile list my two touchstone products, Candy Crush Saga and Pokemon Go, made the list at fourth and tenth place.  Not bad in such a crowded market.  Meanwhile Lineage M, the big mobile money maker for NCsoft these days, remained on the list, though it dropped two spots.  Since that appears to have scavenged a big segment of the legacy Lineage user base, long the company financial bedrock, I hope that the mobile version holds on for their sake.

Imperishable Memories Is A Narrative Shmup Of Coming To Terms With Past Mistakes

HgH%2FRb.png

There tends not to be much room for story while players are dodging hails of bullets during shmups, but developer Jennifer Raye is trying to change that with Imperishable Memories, a bullet hell shooter that tells a story of a being coming to terms with their past mistakes and learning to move on as best they can.

Atherus is a world created by Roy's memories and creative expressions, and is a place that Thanatos, one of his most foul creations, has taken over. These memory beings and creations are all built, visually, to capture that feeling of looking back at high/middle school art most of us have created ages ago, taking us back to a past with some fond memories and laughter. However, the longer one lingers in these memories, the more they may remember the ugliness that birthed some of these creations and times, something the developer wishes to explore with Imperishable Memories.

This story is told through cutscenes, but also through the game's shmup play, which will have players exchanging shots with various flying enemies. However, players can also grab an enemy and toss them at others, using this close-range attack to rack up ridiculous high scores.

Thoughtful and exciting in equal measures, Imperishable Memories promises a special shmup experience upon its release.

q1tbkr.png

For more information on Imperishable Memories and developer Jennifer Raye, you can head to the game's Itch.io page or follow the developer on Twitter. The game is also currently raising development funding on Kickstarter.

ESRB will add warning labels to games with microtransactions

Games containing microtransactions will now feature a warning label in America.

The move is part of fresh push by the ESRB - the board which gives age ratings to games in the US, Canada and Mexico - to better educate parents on the ways children can spend money within games.

All games which offer some way of spending further money will be branded with the label - from those which offer blind loot boxes and flog in-game currency, to those which simply offer the ability to buy a season pass or DLC pack. In other words: this will affect most games.

Monster Hunter: World Meets Horizon Zero Dawn: How to Unlock Aloy’s Armor and Bow

Hello everyone! I am Ryozo Tsujimoto, producer on Monster Hunter: World.

At the launch of Monster Hunter: World, we released a free collaboration event quest where hunters were able to make their Palico companions look like a machine from Horizon Zero Dawn. Starting February 28th at 0:00 UTC, a new free Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration event quest will be available. This time, you’ll be able to play as Aloy herself once you collect the materials to forge the unique themed gear! The quest will be live until March 15th at 23:59 UTC. If you missed the first event quest period to get the Watcher-themed Palico gear, we have good news for you today. Event quests are on a rotating schedule so you will have an opportunity to try out the quest at a later date. Please stay tuned for more information on when it will return.

In this brand new collaboration event quest, you receive a request from the Nora Tribe chief to hunt down a giant Anjanath in the Ancient Forest. Many captivating machines appear in Horizon Zero Dawn, but the one that made the biggest impression on the Monster Hunter: World development team was the Thunderjaw. Anjanath has a very similar skeletal structure to the Thunderjaw, so we felt it was the best fit to be the main adversary in the quest, but not just any Anjanath would do. This Anjanath is at a scale that many players will have never before encountered, and your typical attacks may not reach its height. We hope hunters will take on this challenge and enjoy a fresh new experience.

Monster Hunter: World – Aloy Armor Set

If you complete this event quest, you’ll obtain the Nora Brave Trophy item that gives you access to crafting the Aloy α armor set and Aloy’s Bow weapon. You cannot mix and match the full armor set with other pieces of gear, but unlike cosmetic armor sets, there are skills tied to the set that can also be upgraded. For example, the Aloy α set has the Marathon Runner skill which fits the character Aloy’s image perfectly. This is a very effective and useful armor set. It’s important to note that this set is not exclusive to female hunters! If you’re playing as a male hunter, equipping the Aloy α set will also change your appearance to Aloy.

To participate in this free event quest, you must be Hunter Rank 11 or higher. You may need to complete the quest multiple times to obtain enough materials to craft all the Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration gear, so jump on in with friends and take down that giant Anjanath! Then swing on by the Smithy in Astera and start crafting all the gear.

Monster Hunter: World – Horizon Zero Dawn Aloy Armor Set

Many of our staff are fans of Horizon Zero Dawn and have great respect for it. Discussions on the collaboration first began when Capcom pitched the idea to Sony. From there, we spoke with Guerrilla Games and received a wholehearted approval from them. We shared some of our original design concepts with Guerrilla Games and received some ideas from them as well. It was a really smooth collaboration between each of our teams. It felt like such a natural fit to collaborate with Guerilla Games to allow hunters in Monster Hunter: World to experience the game through the eyes of the powerful hunter Aloy. We hope you all enjoy this great collaboration content!
