New 'The Quest' Expansion 'Macha's Curse' is Now Available

The legend of Redshift's The Quest [$7.99] just continues to grow as today a new expansion called Macha's Curse [$2.99] has arrived for the game. The Quest is an old-school style grid-based first-person RPG that began on handheld computing devices more than a decade ago. When the iPhone (and iPod touch and iPad) arrived they presented a perfect home for the beloved series. Several years back developer Redshift set out to remake the game in high definition, and while the original app and its many, MANY expansions continue to exist in the App Store the "HD" versions are the ones that are now the focus of development. Previously available expansions like Island of Ice and Fire and Hero of Lukomorye have made the jump to HD as well, but as far as I can tell Macha's Curse is a brand new expansion that hasn't been released before.

This expansion is the work of Zarista Games, a studio who has worked in partnership with Redshift for years now and are responsible for the bulk of the expansion releases. Like all the expansions for The Quest, this one can be accessed from within the main game app by making sure the Macha's Curse app is installed and then visiting the Mithria Harbor inside The Quest and talking to Captain Hanty to travel to the new destination and activate the new expansion content. Also like the other expansions Macha's Curse can be played as a standalone experience without having to own the regular The Quest app. It's recommended that you have your The Quest character leveled up to at least 40 before tackling Macha's Curse, and if you're playing as a standalone experience the game will generate an appropriately leveled character for you.

While I'm personally still plenty busy with the huge amount of content that the base The Quest game offers, it makes me happy to see these expansions coming at a decent clip, so if you need some more adventuring in your life then give Macha's Curse a spin and drop by the forum thread to share your thoughts.

Secret Little Haven Is About Fandom, Gender, And Discovering Yourself

StwHCW.png

Secret Little Haven is a game about self discovery through chat programs, forums, online friendships, fan sites, games, and exploring the internet. Using SanctuaryOS, players can play around with various games and tools, or set out into the web to talk to friends, steadily finding a world where you can finally be who you really are.

One of the beauties of online existence is that, for many of us, they are one of the first places where we can be who we truly are. Freed from the chains of our current bodies and the previous expectations created for us in the world, we are allowed to explore the self through what we do and interact with when we set out into the internet. This can be a soothing, happy experience, or one fraught with questions, for Alex Cole, a young trans teenager looking to have fun and wile the rainy Summer days away.

Secret Little Haven creates an entire digital playground for players to discover, offering various chat programs, minigames, and websites about magical girls for players to comb through as they follow Alex's journey in finding herself. Not that the early internet can be all sunshine, but through exploring its hidden places, buried treasures, and the private thoughts of friends as they open up to one another, the truth of how Alex really feels can blossom, taking the player on a heart-wrenching, beautiful journey.

Secret Little Haven is available for $5 on Itch.io. For more information on the game and developer Victoria Dominowski, you can follow them on YouTube and Twitter.

Line-Drawing Physics Puzzler 'Polar Rollout' Coming April 18th, Up for Pre-Order Now

There was a time in the App Store when you couldn't avoid seeing a physics puzzler at every turn, which is fine and all, but once a genre gets overly-saturated like that it's hard to get excited for each new release. Well like many of the most overdone genres on mobile, there also comes a point where enough time has passed and you're actually in a mood for one of those games again. That's how I felt when I saw the trailer for Polar Rollout from developer Blue Evolution. Your job here is to draw a path using the touchscreen that your character can roll along destroying any enemies in its path and making it to the goal. Here's a trailer.

Polar Rollout will include 120 levels across 6 different worlds and will come with multiple playable characters to unlock and a host of unique special abilities. It looks cute and well-designed, and like I said before I'm actually in the mood for a new physics puzzler at this point in my mobile gaming life. If you feel the same then you can actually pre-order Polar Rollout ahead of its planned April 18th release date. Just click this link on an iOS 11 device and be magically whisked away to the App Store where you can pre-order and then the game will similarly magically automatically download to your device when it arrives. For more you can drop by the forum thread which has been chugging along for more than two years as the game has been in development.

'Tales of Gaia' Now Soft Launched

When we announced back in June of last year that Snail Games, the developer of Taichi Panda [Free] and Age of Wushu [Free], was working on a new MMO, there was very little detail in regard to what the game would play like or how it would look outside of cutscenes. We are talking about it today to let you know that that game has soft-launched in several European markets, and there has since been quite a flood of beta footage and information leaked to clue us into what Tales of Gaia is all about.

Originally titled Dark and Light: Tales of Gaia, this game now sports a slimmed-down moniker. A wave of nostalgia may wash over you looking at the left side character portrait, quest log, and d-pad or the right side notifications, mini-map, and skill buttons. Sub-menus are also very familiar with gem packs, daily log-ins and milestone achievement rewards. That nostalgia would probably stem from the fact that the interface of the game is now very much an industry standard among MMO staples. The setting is the classic fantasy world that seems to have just enough technology to see plate armor, brick and mortar buildings and gun powder. Since August it looks like the game has expanded from 3 races to 4. Lithe Elves, barbaric Titans and the standard Human were pre-existing and since then the short and cute Dwarf race has been added to the game.

It will be an interesting change for Snail to tackle a more Western-themed game. Some screens look so very familiar to the >World of Warcraft city Stormwind that it begs the question, is Snail inviting a comparison? Can we expect something more like a PC MMO than we have seen yet on mobile? As a developer they have captured app store success since 2015 and it is poised to continue delivering AAA title quality to mobile devices. We look forward to hearing more about Tales of Gaia and hope to see more features that help it stand out from the competition.

Delightful tabletop RPG roguelike For the King is leaving early access next month

Developer IronOak Games has announced that its delightful tabletop-RPG-meets-digital-board-game For the King will be leaving Steam early access in April, with an Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch release planned for 2019.

I stumbled across For the King on Steam early last year, and it's a game I keep coming back to. It features a bunch of familiar, if streamlined, RPG systems - dungeon crawling, questing, turn-based exploration and combat, loot acquisition, and so on - and fashions them into a tough, roguelike experience that plays out something like the RNG-heavy, luck-mitigation designs of so-called Ameritrash board games, such as Arkham Horror.

For the King's story isn't exactly a complicated one: the king is dead and your plucky band of three adventurers, picked from a pool of distinct classes, must scour the hex-based kingdom in search of his killer. However, it's got a real, swashbuckling sense of anything-can-happen adventure, thanks to the myriad mini-events that can pop onto the procedurally assembled map any time as you roam the world.
